Day 3 - short and almost sweet

Since we got in relatively early last night we were up early today. Hotel breakfast and we hit the road at 7:45 AM. It was overcast but the temp was a comfortable 58. We only had 170 miles to do today and most of it interstate, yet just 30 minutes down the road, we ran into a wall of stopped vehicles - there was an accident at 5:30 AM that closed both southbound lanes of i-81 in Pennsylvania.

Approaching the backup

We were in mostly stop with the very occasional crawl until we got close enough to the exit they were diverting everyone off and we finally snaked down the breakdown lane of the exit to go the opposite direction of where they were detouring everyone else. Since we had a short day we figured better to be riding a little longer but be moving most of the time. Our little detour was only 20 miles or so but it was a nice twisty road with hardly a car to be seen.

View on the detour

Further down the road we ran through some tedious construction zones around Scranton, but once clear of that it was a relative breeze to the exit off the interstate to our last 30 miles or so on country 2 lane down through Lykens Valley. The only nagging issue by then was my fuel situation. I knew it was going to be close for me to make it all the way from my last fill-up in Troy NY. I paid a lot of attention to both the GPS for distance to destination as well as my fuel indicator waiting to see when I would get my low fuel warning light. It usually comes on in the 260-280 range, but today it didn't come on until 291! When it did go on it changes to a count down of miles to go to empty and it was stating 65, but with a distance to destination of only 30 I knew I was in fine shape. There is a gas station just down the street from Larry's house (our destination for today) so I just gassed up on the way in. We got there at 10:35 AM.

We had planned to be here by yesterday and have the whole day off so I could put on a fresh rear tire and make other tweaks, but I did manage to get that done in the half day. Larry is trying to sort some issues with his radio set-up and with a weather front approaching we just may hold up here one additional day... We'll see.

Today's stats: 177 miles in 3 hr 50 min.
